Sacramento, Calif. – The California State Attorney General today cleared for circulation the landmark Pension Reform Initiative known as the “Voter Empowerment Act.”
A bipartisan coalition led by former San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed (D) and former San Diego City Councilmember Carl DeMaio (R), filed the ballot initiative to give voters the final say on compensation and pension benefits of state and local government employees.

California’s independent Legislative Analyst’s Office has concluded that Carl DeMaio’s pension reform initiative could produce significant savings if approved by voters next year.
The ballot initiative, filed in June, would require voter approval for any new pensions or increases to existing pensions for government employees. Read more

Carl DeMaio is leading the fight to reform unfair and unsustainable pension payouts in state and local government.
In 2012, DeMaio successfully filed, qualified and passed the Prop B Pension Reform Initiative in the City of San Diego. This landmark reform measure capped pension payouts for existing government employees and switched new employees to a simple and fair 401(k) defined contribution plan. Read more
