Filner Explodes Over Coin Toss at Debate

San Diego, CA-- After arriving 15 minutes late to a debate, Congressman Bob Filner refused to go on stage after winning a coin toss to answer the first question, and give first closing remarks.

"Do we want a Mayor who acts like a child and can't even keep his temper under control when he loses a coin toss?" asked K.B. Forbes, Communications Director for Filner's opponent, Carl DeMaio.

In an awkward scene, the debate started with Carl DeMaio anddebate moderator Heather Myers of local television station CW6 on stage while Filner's podium stood empty.

While a promotion video of UCSD played a few minutes after the start of the debate, backstage Filner angrily refused to go on stage unless he was able to answer the second question or present the second closing statement.

When Forbes, who was backstage, noted that a similar rule was imposed at the SDCTA debate (first opening statement and first closing statement), Filner exploded and vulgarly declared, "You're full of sh*t. "

As the debate returned from the promotional video, Carl DeMaio made some remarks and began encouraging the crowd to applaud and started calling Filner to come out on stage.

Filner came out but refused to answer the first question. DeMaio accepted to answer the first question.

During closing statements, Filner loudly interrupted DeMaio, prompting the moderating to intervene. Filner eventually regained his composure, the moderator added 30 seconds to DeMaio’s closing statement to make up for the lost time.
