"DeMaio Announces Qualification of Pension Reform Initiative"

Dear Friends:

YOU DID IT!!! With your help, we have offically qualified the Comprehensive Pension Reform Ballot Measure for the June 2012 election!

And we broke a record! According to the official count by the City Clerk, a total of 115,991 valid signatures were contained on our petitions -- well in excess of the required 94,500 signatures necessary to force an issue on the ballot.

This pension reform measure is the centerpiece of my plan to fix the city's financial crisis - and I chose the initiative process because I'm not waiting to be Mayor before getting this reform done.

After years of fiscal crisis, service cuts, and higher fees, voters can now impose a comprehensive solution to end unsustainable pension payouts in city government.

This ballot measure produces billions in savings for taxpayers by moving new employees into 401(k) retirement accounts and capping the pensionable pay of existing employees.

My approach to advancing pension reform reflects how I will tackle the city's problems as your next Mayor:

I offer comprehensive plans with bold and specific reforms to fix the city's problems.

I reach out to all parties to build consensus and forge broad coalitions to advance reform.

I personally commit all of my energy and action to work side-by-side with San Diegans to get the job done.

While some simply talk about reform, I am grateful to the thousands of San Diegans who joined our campaign to do the hard work of actually getting reform done!

This win for taxpayers would not have been possible without the tireless work of our entire coalition of businesses, neighborhood groups, and taxpayer advocates representing every political party -- who along with current Mayor Jerry Sanders have essential partners in advancing this initiative.

I pledge to continue to make pension reform my top priority and look forward to working with San Diegans to impose these changes on city politicians at the ballot box.

Thank you for your continued support for our efforts to reform City Hall!

-Carl DeMaio
